$27 Million in Tech Grants Awarded for Early Math, Literacy

The U.S. Department of Education today announced three grants totaling $27 million for projects focused on using innovative technology to help young children ages 2 to 8 develop their literacy and mathematics skills.

The five-year grants, funded under the department's Ready-to-Learn Television program, were awarded to several public telecommunications entities that will provide the services nationwide: Window to the World Communications, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting in partnership with the Public Broadcasting Service, and the Hispanic Information and Telecommunications Network.

"We know that children of all ages are engaged when given the opportunity to learn with new technologies," U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan said. "These grants will surround young children with a variety of innovative media to equip them with early-literacy and -numeracy skills to prepare them for success in school."
